My favourite Squarespace blocks. No 2: the quote block

Next up in my mini series all about my favourite Squarespace blocks I’m going to be talking about the quote block. It’s a little-known block that’s actually ideal for author websites – it’s almost as though Squarespace designed it just for us!

The quote block can be used to add quotes, blurbs, testimonials, reviews – any lovely words about your book that people might have said – to your author website. It also gives you an extra styling option for the fonts on your website, on top of the Paragraph, Heading 1, Heading 2 etc etc options, which is really useful if you want to draw attention to your author testimonials and really make them stand out on the page.

It’s super simple to add too – simply click the insert point at where you’d like to add the block, and choose Quote from the block menu. Type the quote itself in the top box, and then the source in the bottom, click Apply and you’re done.

Just a FYI: you don’t need to add speech marks or the em dash for the quote source, as these are already built-into the block.

You also have some nice animation options included with the quote block. Animations are basically just moving elements on the page.

Similar to the image block, you can have your quotes ‘slide in’ or ‘reveal’ – simply select the Animations tab and choose the animation you like best.

Simple right?!

I like to sprinkle quote blocks throughout the pages on the websites I design, and I use them to draw attention to the quotes my authors are most proud of. They can also be used on top of banner images.

If you have a lot of quotes, I suggest stacking some quote blocks side by side, or even mixing up the formatting so that some of them are in plain text. It can look a little overwhelming to have tons of quote blocks stacked on top of one another and then the impact can be lost. So have a play around with them until you’re happy with how they look!

Styling the quote block

The quote block on your website will have its own styling options already built in and this will differ depending on which template you’ve used for your website. But if you don’t like the way the quote block on your site looks, don’t worry. This is fully customisable in the Design section of your website.

How you would style the quote block depends on whether you are using Squarespace 7.0 or 7.1 for your website. Squarespace has a handy guide on how to style this block here – so do check it out if you’d like to change the font size/whether it’s italics or not etc.

Here’s a little video running you through all this – hope it’s helpful, and please leave me a comment if you have any questions!
