What is Squarespace?

Good question! Squarespace is a website building platform and hosting company. This means you can manage all your website’s needs - from hosting to domain registration and even email marketing - in one place.

But all the authors I know are on Wordpress?

I was a die-hard Wordpress user for years. But two years ago I switched my entire website and blog over to Squarespace and haven’t looked back. There are many reasons I think Squarespace is superior - but the main reason is security. I had two Wordpress blogs, both of which were hacked at various points, even though I had numerous security plugins installed - one of which was costing me a hefty annual fee. Wordpress is a self-hosting platform, and the price of its flexibility is that it’s incredibly vulnerable. Squarespace host all their websites themselves, which makes them incredibly secure and safe. How much does Squarespace cost?

Squarespace plans start from £12 per month. You can see more detail on their pricing page. Please note the cost of domain and hosting is not included in your design package. But… if you work with me, you’ll get 20% off your first year’s hosting!

How do you charge?

In order to secure your design slot in my calendar, I require a 50% deposit. Then, once the project is finished the remaining 50% will be due.

Before paying your deposit I’ll send you a contract to sign, which outlines the payment schedule.

Do your prices include VAT?

I am not currently VAT registered so no!

What support is included with the finished website?

Right before we launch, I will walk you through how to update your site on a training call - the length of which varies depending on which package you go for. I’ll also be on hand to answer questions over email for a fortnight after you launch.

What do I need to have ready for the project?

All the content for your website! A week before I begin work on your site, you'll need to have all the text, images, videos, etc ready to go. Once you book in with me, you’ll also be sent two questionnaires to fill in which help me to get an idea of your ideal website visitor, as well as your style and brand preferences. But don’t panic - I’ll provide a comprehensive Welcome Package that guides you through getting all your ducks in a row!

Is a logo included?

No. Generally speaking, authors don’t need them. However, Squarespace allows you to create beautiful text ‘logos’ using their extensive font library, so I will create an impactful heading for your site using this. I will also take inspiration from the font chosen for your name on the jackets of your books. If you’re a non-fiction author and are interested in branding, I can recommend a fantastic graphic designer who can work with you for an additional fee.

When can you get started on my project?

Ideally an author’s website should go live around 3 months before their book is released, so it’s best to get in early and secure your slot in my design calendar as soon as you think you need a site. I am currently booking two months’ in advance, but may have last-minute slots come up, so please get in touch and we can discuss!

Do you offer ongoing support once the website is live?

Yes! I love working with past clients. Depending on what you have in mind, I'll charge you a project or hourly rate.

I’m not an author but I think we might be a good fit. Can you still create me a site?
